German medal awarded to Leon de Winter

The Buber-Rosenzweig Medal 2006 has been awarded to Leon de Winter for his contribution to the debate on integration. The jury praised De Winter for the realistic picture that his novels generate of the lives of Jews in Europe, as well as his standpoint in debates. Friedrich Dürrenmatt (in 1977) and Isaac Bashevis Singer (1981) were previous medal winners. The medal is awarded annually in memory of the Jewish philosophers and educators Martin Buber (1878-1965) and Franz Rosenzweig (1886-1929).
