Public chooses Geert Mak's In Europa

The result of the 18th edition of the NS Publieksprijs for the best Dutch book has been announced. The prize will be conferred upon Geert Mak, for the second time in his career. After the prize-winning De eeuw van mijn vader (My Father’s Century) in 2000, his monumental travelogue In Europa has now won the 2004 award.

In this account, Mak literally follows the tracks of history across the continent and down through the century. The book is already an enormous success, with sales of more than 200,000 since its publication in March 2004. Previous winners of the Publieksprijs include Adriaan van Dis, Connie Palmen, Anna Enquist, and Hella S. Haasse. The NS Publieksprijs is an award from the general public, endorsed by the Dutch Rail Service. Only books originally written in Dutch are taken into consideration for this award.
