In Memoriam Arno Pomerans

“I firmly believe that translators are not robots and have to give the author a hand whenever necessary” Arno Pomerans

We announce with deep regret the death of the English translator Arnold J. Pomerans on Monday May 30th in Polstead Heath. One of the pioneers of Dutch-language literature in England and America, Arno Pomerans translated the work of authors such as Johan Huizinga, Jacques Presser, Lou de Jong, Frits van Oostrom, Douwe Draaisma, Etty Hillesum, Anne Frank, Vincent van Gogh, Hugo Claus, Henk Wesseling, Leon de Winter and Arnon Grunberg.

Arno remained active as a translator up to his death. His translations have played a major role in increasing international awareness of Dutch-language literature and culture, and his commitment, talent, flair and sense of humour will be sorely missed. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife and family. For more information: Foundation for the Production and Translation of Dutch Literature, Barbara den Ouden, + 31 20 620 62 61.
