Mulisch awarded Nonino Prize 2007

At a ceremony on 27 January, Harry Mulisch will be awarded the International Nonino Prize. The jury, consisting of twelve people from Italian cultural life, including the author Claudio Magris and the film director Ermanno Olmi, praised Mulisch for the fusion of the ‘macrocosm and microcosm’.

‘Without forgetting his telling the horror of the absolute evil of the century that has just gone by, in the works of Harry Mulisch we discover the admirable fusion between macrocosm and microcosm, a changing drawing up that reveals mysterious worlds, hidden to us, real alchemic works; a pleasure that transforms the paradox into lightness.’ The prize – an artwork and a sum of money – was set up by the Italian grappa producer Nonino in 1977. V.S. Naipaul will hand over the prize to Mulisch. Previous winners include illustrious names such as Hugo Claus, John Banville, and Tomas Tranströmer.
