Vondel Translation Prize 2003 for Sam Garrett

The Vondel Translation Prize 2003 has been awarded to Sam Garrett for his translation into English of De renner (The Rider, Bloomsbury, London) by Tim Krabbé. The prize will be presented during a literary manifestation around Saint Jerome's Day, the patron saint of translators, in London on 22 September. Susan Massotty was awarded an honourable mention for her translation of Allerzielen (All Souls' Day, Picador, London) by Cees Nooteboom.

The Vondel Translation Prize is a biennial award for the best book translation into British or American English of a prominent Dutch-language literary or cultural-historical work. The award was set up by the English Society of Authors and is funded by the Foundation for the Production and Translation of Dutch Literature and the Flemish Literature Fund. The award is worth € 2,000,-. Previous winners included Hester Velmans for her translation of Een hart van steen (Heart of stone) by Renate Dorrestein, Ina Rilke for her translations of De virtuoos (The virtuoso) by Margriet de Moor and Omweg naar Santiago (Roads to Santiago) by Cees Nooteboom, and Stacey Knecht for her translation of Het grote verlangen (The great longing) by Marcel Möring.

Sam Garrett (1956) was born in America and currently divides his time between Amsterdam and the French Pyrenees. Besides work by Tim Krabbé, he has also translated books by Karel Glastra van Loon, Arnon Grunberg, Lieve Joris, and Nanne Tepper, among others.
