Café Amsterdam: a festive opening event with readings and live music to celebrate the start of Café Amsterdam in Shanghai. With Wang Anyi, Margriet de Moor, Chen Cun and Anna Enquist
In every country the café is the perfect meeting place - for friends and couples, of course, but also for artists and writers. The city with the highest density of cafés in the world is Amsterdam. This event brings two of the greatest authors of Chinese and Dutch literature together on stage: Wang Anyi and Margriet de Moor. Both have gained an international readership with their refined and subtle storytelling. Margriet de Moor's Drowned recently appeared in Chinese translation, published by Shanghai Literature and Arts. Anna Enquist, whose The Masterpiece recently appeared in Chinese translation from Shanghai Literature and Arts, draws inspiration for their literary work from music and the visual arts. Chen Cun recently spent several months in the Netherlands as a writer in residence, one of the main reasons for accepting this invitation was his great interest in painting. The Everlasting Regret (1995) is seen as the highpoint of her work. Through the story of the tumultuous life of her central character, a former beauty queen, Wang Anyi paints a nostalgic and at the same time ironic portrait of Shanghai from the 1940s to the 1990s. Among books by Wang Anyi that have appeared in Dutch is the novel Baotown (Wereldvenster, 1990).]]> 王安忆是中国当代主要作家之一。她是作家茹志鹃的女儿，1954年生于南京，1955年随母移居上海。她的初期创作多以亲历的知青生活为题材，之后，着重于描绘女性的生活。《长恨歌》(1995年)被赞为她的杰作。这部长篇小说以女主角，前"上海小姐"坎坷的一生，怀旧地并带有讽刺意味地对上世纪四十至九十年代上海进行了描绘。王安忆的中篇小说《小鲍庄》已有荷兰语译本(1990)。

Bloem en (1997) was published in translation in Het trage vuur 35. Several of his short stories appeared in De Brakke Hond 42 and the collection City Life was published by Dutch publisher Manteau/Meulenhoff in 1996.]]> 陈村，原名杨遗华，1954年生于上海。与其同龄人一样，在文革期间在农村插队。上世纪八十年代开始文学创作。陈村将精力投入网络文学发展，这是知名作家中十分难得的；他成功地将网络发展成实验小说的园地。陈村对当代男女关系的描写以幽默和犀利的分析著称。其小说《鲜花和》(1997年)的一段节译被刊登在荷文第35期《文火》杂志上。数篇短篇小说的荷文译文也被收入比利时第42期《猎犬》杂志和荷兰《都市生活》(1996)选集里。

Soldiers' Songs, for which she was awarded the C. Buddingh Prize, she was working as a psychoanalyst. Since then she has devoted much of her time to writing. One of her novels, The Masterpiece (1995) has recently been translated into Chinese (Shanghai Literature and Arts). In 2005 she published the major historical novel The Homecoming, which focuses on James Cook's wife Elizabeth Batts. For the French translation of that novel, she received the Prix du Livre Corderie Royale-Hermione. Bi Feiyu was born in 1964 in the south-western province of Jiangsu. After completing his studies in literature in 1987 he spent five years as a university teacher and six years as a journalist. He is now a magazine editor and a scriptwriter, who adapted, for example, a novel by Li Xiao for Zhang Yimou’s film Shanghai Triad (1995). Since the late 1980s he has published novels, novellas and short stories. Bi Feiyu is regarded as a highly promising talent, especially in the field of the short story, for which he has won prizes including the prestigious Lu Xun Literature Prize. His work has been translated into several languages. His short novel The Moon Opera was published in 2006 by De Geus and several of his stories have appeared in Het trage vuur, a magazine for Chinese literature.

Margriet de Moor

After a career as a classical singer, Margriet de Moor (b. 1941, Noordwijk) decided to become a writer - a decision that has proved particularly felicitous. She was immediately recognised as a major talent, becoming one of the most popular writers in Dutch, and she went on to become a literary presence abroad with the international success of her novels First Grey, Then White, Then Blue and The Virtuoso. De Moor has since published successful novels including The Duke of Egypt and Kreutzer Sonata. Her sensitive, perceptive, delicate writing and the meticulous structure of her books slowly but surely carry the reader away and this holds true more than ever for her new novel Drowned, in which the shock that changes many human lives forever is meteorological: a disastrous flood that the writer bases with documentary precision on the floods that hit the Dutch province of Zeeland in 1953. Drowned was published in China earlier this year by Shanghai Literature and Arts.

Cees Nooteboom (b. 1933) debuted in 1955 and has since built up an impressive oeuvre of novels, poetry, short stories and travelogues. His work has earned him numerous awards, among them the Bordewijk Prize, the American Pegasus Prize for Rituals (1980) and the Aristeion European Prize for Literature for The Following Story (1991), which was translated into over twenty languages and signalled his international breakthrough. In 2009 he was awarded the prestigious Prize for Dutch Letters for his oeuvre as a whole. The jury described his work as profound and philosophical, identifying these qualities as the reason why Nooteboom is so esteemed abroad. In 2010 he was awarded the German Konrad Adenauer Prize.
