Frank Westerman wins Golden Owl

The Gouden Uil Award for Literature 2005 has been conferred upon Frank Westerman for El Negro en ik (El Negro and I), published by Atlas, 2004. In the words of the jury, this non-fiction book is ‘a compelling indictment of opportunism. It is a passionate plea against idle thought and arrogance’.

In addition to Westerman, the following authors had also been nominated: Patricia de Martelaere for Het onverwachte antwoord (The Unexpected Response), Arnon Grunberg for De joodse messias (The Jewish Messiah), Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer for Het grote baggerboek (The Great Book of Dredgings), and Paul Verhaeghen for Omega minor. Both Gouden Uil Awards consist of a sum of twenty-five thousand Euros and a trophy designed by Ever Meulen. Besides the official awards, the public awards were also announced: this year the awards were given to Patricia de Martelaere and Paul Verrept.
