Henriette Roland Holst Award for Bas Heijne

Bas Heijne has won the Henriette Roland Holst Award for his collection of essays Hollandse toestanden (The State of the Netherlands), published by Prometheus, Amsterdam, 2005. At the same time, this award is also an appreciation of Heijne’s essays on art (De werkelijkheid, Reality, 2004) and his interviews in Tafelgesprekken (Table discussions), published in 2004.

The award is bestowed once every three years for work that excels in both social commitment and literary level. The jury stated: ‘In an impressive manner, Bas Heijne lays the finger on the pulse of a society regarded by many as being sick or degenerate’.
