Buddingh’ award for Willem Thies
This year’s C. Buddingh’ award for new Dutch-language poetry has been awarded to Willem Thies (1973). In their report, the jury described his debut collection Toendra (‘Tundra’) as a collection characterized by ‘coarseness and inhospitability (…) Life is a ruthless battlefield and Willem Thies is a war journalist. He does this in a way that demonstrates that shining jewels come out of the dark earth.’
Besides Thies, Thomas Möhlmann (De vloeibare jongen, ‘The Liquid Boy’), Els Moors (Er hangt een hoge lucht boven ons, ‘There’s a High Sky Above Us’), and Alexis de Roode (Geef mij een wonder, ‘Give Me a Wonder’) were also nominated. More information: www.poetry.nl
