German awards for Dolf Verroen
Wie schön weiß ich bin, the German translation of Slaaf kindje slaaf (Baa, Baa, Black Sheep) by Dolf Verroen has been awarded the Deutsche Jugendliteraturpreis, in the category: youth literature. The book deals with a girl in nineteenth-century Surinam who receives a slave for her twelfth birthday. The translation was by Rolf Erdorf and the book was published by Peter Hammer Verlag.
Two other Dutch books were nominated for this award: Kweenie (Dunno) by Joke van Leeuwen, (Weißnich, translated by Hanni Ehlers and published by Gerstenberg Verlag) and Toen Faas niet thuiskwam (When Faas Didn’t Come Home) by Martha Heesen (Die Nacht, als Mats nicht heimkam, also translated by Rolf Erdorf, published by Sauerländer Verlag).

Verroen’s book was also awarded the Gustav-Heinemann-Friedenspreis für Kinder- und Jugendbücher, an important German prize for juvenile and youth literature.
