Henk van Woerden honoured posthumously

Ultramarijn (Ultramarine) the last book of Henk van Woerden, who died unexpectedly at the beginning of this year, was not allowed to compete for the Libris Literature Prize. Dead writers cannot participate in a competition, was the opinion of the jury.

The fact that an important and excellent book was excluded was regarded as a great injustice by many literature readers. The jury of the Gouden Uil rectified this situation in one go by assigning the book the Gouden Uil Prize for Literature 2006.

Ultramarijn was praised by the jury as ‘a book that demonstrates why good literature is necessary, a book with many themes that go beyond the issues of the day, a book on perseverance, loss, and scars, a book with the great sensitivity of an acute, observant mind, a symphony with many undertones, earthy, clear and reserved, a well-considered and mature book, a book to treasure for a long time.’
