The Prijs der Nederlandse Letteren (Prize for Dutch Literature) has been awarded to Jeroen Brouwers for his extensive oeuvre. The jury praised Brouwers as an ‘extraordinary stylist’ who ‘has blazed a new trail in post-war Dutch literature.’ Furthermore, Brouwers has transformed the ego document into a fully fledged literary genre’ and the jury considers Brouwers’ letter books to be of ‘unequalled quality’. Brouwers wrote his famous polemics ‘full of fire and indignation, but always with much love for the subject.’ The prize of 16,000 euros is awarded once every three years.
